We measured a blood flow from esophgeal varices using a new technique of endoscopic doppler ultrasonography before and after endoscopic injection sclerotherapy (EIS) in 19 cases. The blood flow of the varices was obtained in all cases before EIS using the device. One week after the end of EIS, no varices was found in 11 cases , however the remaining blood flow was detected in 6 cases among them. The reccurence of the esophageal varices occured in half of the 6 cases (50%), within 6 months. On the other hand, no recurrence was found within 6 months in cases with out the remaining blood flow. It was concluded that endoscopic doppler ultrasonography is a useful device to evaluate the blood flow of varices after EIS and to predict the early reccurence of esophageal varices.
