Pediatrics

Overview

We provide general and advanced medical care for children, and have staffs in 7 specialized fields. We are mainly conducting research related to immunological/allergic diseases including Kawasaki disease, with a central focus on clarifying the pathogenic mechanisms of allergy and therapeutic intervention, pathophysiology of vasculitis in Kawasaki disease and its therapeutic options, new approach to analysis of brain development by MRI, pathogenesis and epidemiology of invasive bacterial infection due to Haemophilus influenzae and Pneumococcus, pediatric cancer studies, endocrinological disorders such as mineral and glucose metabolism, and all aspects of neonatology, fetal medicine and developmental biology. Intergroup collaboration is encouraged to promote research activities in our department. Collaboration with basic scientists in Chiba University and companies is one of the characteristics of our department.

We are doing clinical and basic research. Main research themes are;

  1. Mechanism and risk factors for development of allergy, and its prevention/early intervention Cytokines, function of lymphocytes, signal transduction and regulation of gene expression.
  2. Birth cohort studies, genetic, viruses, and environmental factors for child diseases
  3. Kawasaki disease: mechanism of vasculitis and its clinical application
  4. Explore brain development by new analysis methods using MRI
  5. Vaccination for pediatric patients with underlying choronic illness
  6. Comprehensive treatment for pediatric cancers and its new treatment options
  7. Endocrinological disorders such as mineral and glucose metabolism, pediatric diabetes
  8. Neonatology, fetal medicine and developmental biology
